The British Dietetic Association General and Education Trust exists “to advance education and other charitable purposes related to the science of dietetics”.  The Trust has an income of about £50,000 a year and can make grants to individuals and to recognised associations or groups of people engaged in dietetic research and related matters.

Providing the grant application falls within the objectives for which the General and Education Trust was set up, grants can be made for running costs, project costs and (exceptionally) for help with salaries.  The loan of essential equipment will be considered.

The Trust does not:

  1. make grants for building or building work;
  2. make grants in support of fees and associated expenses for acquiring post-graduate qualifications;
  3. fund periods of elective study for medical students;
  4. support dietetic students in training, whether at undergraduate or post-graduate level.

The Trust cannot help with grants for every project put forward, even though the projects may meet its criteria.  In some cases, only partial support may be offered, or grants may be made subject to certain conditions which must be met to obtain funding.

Reviewers

As a general policy the Trustees will wish to seek the views of The British Dietetic Association on grant applications, to get a view from the professional body about the suitability and relevance of the proposal.  In addition, the Trustees may remit project applications to expert referees for an opinion.  However, the decision on whether to support a project or not will be a decision of the Trustees alone.

Please refer to reviewer’s guidelines document for information on how the proposal will be assessed

Process

Applications need to be submitted not later than six weeks before the meeting of the Trust at which you wish your grant application to be considered. This is to ensure that reviewers have plenty of time to review the application, ask supplementary questions and advise the Trustees on the application.   A list of the Trustees meeting dates is overleaf.

You will be notified of the outcome of your application as soon as possible following the meeting of the Trustees.  The discussions concerning applications and, in the event of a refusal, the reasons for rejection, are confidential. However the Trustees will provide brief feedback on the reasons why applications are rejected to assist applicants in the future.

Conditions

If the Trustees are able to make a grant it must be used exclusively for the purposes specified in the application.  The Trustees will require interim and final reports on any project they have supported.  Any requests to change the purposes of the project or to reschedule payments must be made in writing and no alternations to approved plans may be made without express permission.

Your signature on the application form confirms that you have accepted these conditions.
