Communication Skills for Dietetic Support Workers

Facilitator: Fiona Moor, Service Manager for Dietetics and Speech and Language Therapy, Rehab & Cancer Directorate, Royal Derby Hospital.
This one-day course is aimed at dietetic support workers working in acute and community settings who are relatively new in post, although those with some knowledge and experience are welcome. The day will cover the importance of good communication and communication techniques, including listening skills and the “Process of Change”. It will provide an introduction to motivating behaviour change.
Aim
To introduce the topics of communication (and its importance for achieving behaviour change, including the use of the ‘Process of Change’) and motivational interviewing.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the seminar delegates will be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding of communication and listening skills;
- recognise aspects of good and bad communication and listening skills;
- demonstrate an understanding of The Process of Change;
- recognise important stages in the cycle of change;
- use at least one tool which can assist in increasing motivation.
