Introduction to Running Group Sessions for Dietetic Support Workers

Facilitator: Amanda Makepeace, Community Dietitian, Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
This one-day course is aimed at dietetic support workers working in acute and community settings who are relatively new in post, although those with some knowledge and experience are welcome. The course will be interactive with a practical slant, will encourage reflection on previous experience of group sessions (running or participating in) and will give advice on coping with difficult behaviours in groups and evaluating sessions effectively. By the end of the session, delegates will have the knowledge and skills needed to run or assist in the running of groups confidently.
Aim
To provide an introduction to running group sessions with adults, focusing on encouraging effective learning and facilitating effective group sessions through awareness of the different learning, teaching and leadership styles, group dynamics and individuals roles in groups.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the seminar delegates will have:
- an understanding of the different styles of learning and the basic principles for assisting effective learning;
- an awareness of the different roles individuals may adopt in a group situation and the various strengths they can bring to the group;
- an awareness of the factors which affect group dynamics;
- an awareness of different strategies used to cope with ‘difficult’ group behaviours and when they can be applied;
- an understanding of the different styles of leadership and the characteristics of successful leaders;
- an awareness of the importance of evaluating group sessions and methods of evaluating.
