Advancing Dietetic Practice in Diabetes

This one-day course is suitable for those who wish to consolidate and advance their practice in the specialist area of diabetes at the DMEG competency level B1 & B/C (equivalent to Band 6 & 7). It assumes a basic understanding and experience in treating diabetes and aims to provide detailed knowledge in a variety of complex situations, from the pregnant to the athlete. It will incorporate the use of carbohydrate counting, the glycaemic index and the glycaemic load. It will cover oral hypoglycaemic agents and insulin profiles including managing insulin dose adjustment in the basal bolus regimen. It aims to challenge and enhance skills in clinical practice.

Aims

  • To develop detailed understanding of the dietary and medical treatment of  diabetes in the following areas:
  • Dietary principals of diabetes in the context of co-morbidities.
  • Use of carbohydrate counting, the glycaemic index and the glycaemic load.
  • Oral hypoglycaemic agents – mode of action and dietary considerations.
  • Insulin profiles and dietary considerations.
  • Insulin dose adjustment /managing the basal bolus regimen including considerations in pregnancy.
  • Managing hypoglycaemia including considerations in sport and exercise.
  • To practically apply this knowledge to complex clinical scenarios; identifying and overcoming barriers to change.
  • To reflect on current practice, service provision, training needs and define areas for change.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, delegates will:

  • Have a detailed knowledge of dietary treatment of diabetes in the context of complex situations.
  • Have a detailed understanding of carbohydrate counting, the glycaemic index and the glycaemic load and the context in which they should be used.
  • Understand the detail of different insulin regimens and oral hypoglycaemic agents (including contraindications) and how this impacts on dietary advice.
  • Be able to teach and advice on managing the basal bolus insulin regimen, including the use of carbohydrate counting.
  • Be able to judge the best approach to diet and treatment in a variety of complex clinical situations.
  • Be able to identify and work towards breaking down barriers to change.
  • Have reflected and set targets for improving dietetic practice at an individual and/or departmental and/or multidisciplinary level and/or higher level.
