Physical Activity Awareness Training

A workshop to raise the awareness of dietitians of the role physical activity can play in the prevention and management of ill health and the contribution which dietitians can made in this area.

The importance of physical activity in the prevention and management of CHD, obesity and type II diabetes particularly, means that dietitians are frequently in a position where they may be required to offer advice to patients regarding increasing their physical activity levels.

Aim

The workshop will provide the dietitian with the knowledge to be able to provide safe and effective advice around physical activity, useful techniques that assist clients to change their behaviour, and knowledge of the work of key partners in the promotion of physical activity.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the seminar delegates will:

  • understand the importance of physical activity in promoting positive health;
  • be knowledgeable about the national recommended guidelines for physical activity and health;
  • understand their roles and responsibilities when recommending patients become more active;
  • be aware of common barriers to physical activity and ways to overcome these;
  • have the knowledge to offer safe and effective advice around physical activity to patients with a range of conditions;
  • gain an understanding of motivational interviewing techniques that can assist clients/patients to explore and resolve their ambivalence to behaviour change;
  • have an understanding of national and local physical activity opportunities.
