Submitting Abstracts

Abstracts submissions for the BDA Conference and Exhibition 2008 have closed.

A separate page describes the Abstract Selection Process.

Authors of successful submissions, which must be original communications, will be expected to present their findings at the Conference. Authors should therefore ensure that they are free to attend the Conference 17-19 June 2008 at the Adelphi Hotel in Liverpool.

Following presentation at the Conference, authors will have their work published in the Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics.

Funding is available from the BDA General Education Trust to support a limited number of places for student members of the BDA and for those chosen to present as original communications.

Format

The entire abstract must fit on to one side of A4. The font or typeface should be Arial 12 point. Within tables and the reference list (if any) the same typestyle should be used but the pitch should be reduced to 10 point. Single Line Spacing should be used.

Title

Type in bold type, beginning in the first space on line 1. Use an initial capital letter only for the first word and for proper nouns. Generally, abbreviations should not be used in the title.

Authors

Leave a blank line between the title and the authors' names. Type authors' names in capitals, giving each author's initials before the surname. Separate names with commas, except for the last name which should be preceded by the word 'and'.

Addresses

Leave a blank line between the authors' names and the addresses. Type addresses in italics; use lower case except for initial letters of words. If there is more than one name and address they should be related by superscript numbers; do not place addresses between the names in a list of authors.

State the postcode if UK; state the country if not UK.

Text

Leave one blank line below the addresses then start in the first space on the next line. Do not leave blank lines between paragraphs. Text should be fully justified (right and left). Use subheadings Background, Methods, Results, Discussion and Conclusions.

References

Within the text, references should be cited in chronological order by author name and publication year. The references should be listed at the end of the text in alphabetical order, giving the full list of authors in the format used in the Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics, e.g.:

Hooper, L. (2001) Dietetic guidelines: Diet in secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease. J Hum Nutr Diet 14, 297-305.

Tables

Tables must be prepared in true table format, (i.e. without the use of tabs or spaces to align the columns) and must be aligned in the text in an upright orientation, not sideways. Give titles to tables. SI units must be clearly indicated for all variables, preferably as part of the column heading. The table should be separated from the text by single horizontal lines at the top and bottom. The column headings should be separated from values by a single line. Otherwise, tables should not be subdivided by lines. For best results when using the Abstract Template, authors should use the "Import Object" function in Word after saving the table as a separate file.

Submitting Your Abstract

Once you have completed your abstract, complete all of the fields in the form below and submit your Word file. We suggest that the Word file name reflects your abstract's title.

Deadline Date

Abstracts must be received by midnight on Friday 18 January 2008. The submit form is no longer available.
