Background Information and Introduction

Following the success of the symposia in previous years, there will again be two in 2011. One will be held in London and the other in Edinburgh. The symposia are open for submissions from all dietitians and dietetic students who are new to research.

The symposia includes:

  • Keynote speakers who will share their research experiences with you.
  • Research presentations, including oral and poster format, by authors whose abstracts have been selected following peer review.
  • Prizes awarded to the best poster and oral presentations.
  • Tea, coffee and buffet lunch.
  • Friendly, inspiring atmosphere

Judy Lawrence, BDA Research Officer explains the aim of the events:

‘The aim of the symposia is to encourage dietitians just starting in their research career by giving them a chance to tell others about their work in a friendly, non threatening environment.  In the January 2011  issue of Dietetics Today you will have read a report of last year’s event in London and hopefully it will encourage you to submit an abstract.

I think all the presenters will agree that the symposia were very friendly and a great experience.  It was also very interesting!  Everyone was pleased, and perhaps surprised, to find how much was relevant to their own practice.  Why not submit an abstract for one of this year’s events or come along and listen to the presentations?’

Below is some feedback from the attendees at the 2010 symposium:

Excellent to see what is happening in other departments and at universities. Interesting, easy to understand and picked up some useful tips to improve my practice. was an excellent environment to present research and promotes an unthreatening atmosphere to dietitians new to research. Very supportive group as well.
