NICE invites stakeholders to comment on 2011/12 Quality Outcomes Framework
The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) has today (Monday 15 March) opened its consultation on potential new indicators for inclusion in the 2011/12 Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF). Stakeholders are invited to email their comments on a set of potential indicators via the NICE website (www.nice.org.uk). Anyone with an interest in health, including health professionals, patients, community groups and voluntary organisations, is encouraged to take part in the consultation.
The consultation is open from Monday 15 March until Sunday 11 April. In August, NICE will publish a menu of recommended indicators for the 2011/12 QOF together with indicators to be considered for retirement. The selection of the final indicators for inclusion within the QOF will be decided by NHS Employers, on behalf of the Health Departments and the General Practitioners Committee (GPC) on behalf of the British Medical Association (BMA). The final QOF indicators are published annually by NHS Employers (NHSE).
We would ask individuals to comment directly via the NICE website please:

New QUIPP Document launched - Read and Share your ideas
The NHS Quality, Innovation, Productivity and Prevention (QIPP) Challenge: an introduction for clinicians has been launched by the Department of Health. The booklet describes how the DH will support clinical teams and NHS organisations to meet the challenges to continue to deliver year on year quality improvements.
How are you meeting the QUIPP challenge? How are you are tackling the challenge locally? How are your team going to continue to improve the quality of care you provide, and do so more efficiently? What plans have you made?
The BDA are really interested in hearing your ideas and innovations, let us know what best practice systems you have put in place and we will collate and share your good practice with the BDA members.
The English Board is coming
How many times have you heard the question ‘what’s the BDA doing about…..?’ and wanted to influence the answer. Or have you expertise in a particular area and want to use it for the benefit of the profession? Now is your opportunity.
The Council of the BDA has approved the setting up of an English Board to lead the Association response to and influence the health policy in England. We need members who are working in England, are strategic thinkers, can demonstrate leadership qualities wherever you are in the profession, have an understanding of health policy and the impact on the profession and importantly who are enthusiastic and committed to representing the wider profession.
There has never been a better time to join a Board. Food and nutrition is high on the agenda, but there are real challenges to the profession to demonstrate quality, effectiveness and value of dietitians. The BDA is working very hard to represent and promote the profession and the benefits of dietetic services to key influencers. This is a fantastic opportunity to make a difference.
The commitment is to attend 2 or 3 meetings a year and to participate in some project work in between. This might be contributing to a document or joining a meeting at the Department of Health. Getting involved can bring a range of benefits. Many members state that being involved helps them do their day job - having a finger on the pulse of dietetic practice and policy influences how they do their work. It is also wonderful CPD opportunity and through being a board member you can develop knowledge and skills around government and organisation strategy, structures and functions. Other members state they have developed or honed skills in influencing, negotiation and decision making at strategic level.
This is your chance to contribute and gain some useful skills.
If you are interested in applying to be a member of the Board, send a CV to Lesley Russell Honorary Secretary before 15th March.
Small steps towards a healthier life
The Food Standards Agency has officially launched SmallSteps4Life – an interactive website to motivate young people to take simple steps towards improving their health and well-being, both inside and outside the classroom.
SmallSteps4Life encourages young people to set themselves challenges, relating to the themes of eating well, getting active and feeling good – these could include eating a healthy breakfast every day, walking to and from school, or just getting more sleep. The updated website gives all primary and secondary schools the opportunity to post their own challenge ideas, play games and take part in quizzes. Teachers can also share their schools’ successes and nominate individuals or groups, who have done particularly well, as SmallSteps4Life 'champions'.
Sip and Tube Feed Database online now
The BDA’s online Tube and Sip Feed Database is now live.
This database details the nutritional composition, ACBS listing status and special features of tube and sip feed products.
Following the success of the old printed A1-size poster, the BDA decided to build an online version allowing members to search for appropriate feeds and allowing the BDA to more easily keep it up to date.

BDA ensuring the quality of its public information - The Information Standard
The BDA is proud to announce that it became successfully certified as holder of The Information Standard on 18th December.
The Information Standard is a Department of Health certification scheme for health and social care information. Successful organisations can use the quality mark on materials to confirm that the information is from a reliable source.
About 50,000 organisations produce health and/or social care information for the public in England and this varies greatly in terms of quality and as a result people can feel overwhelmed by volume of information and unsure what to trust. The Information Standard has been introduced to fulfil this need for a quality 'filter.' It offers a recognisable symbol of quality and reassurance.
The BDA produce a wide range of information to inform the public about nutritional issues. These include Group and Branch documents, food fact sheets, and other BDA produced leaflets and documents.
The BDA has become a founder member and now a certified holder of the Information Standard. We realise the importance of evidence-based information and the Information Standard is an ideal kite mark for us to demonstrate the high and accurate standards by which BDA public information is produced.
We will provide more information and start using the Information Standard logo on our publications from 2010.

Since 1956 FAB has been providing information on all matters relating to flour and bread in the UK to the public, media, schools, health professionals, the catering, retailing and baking trade. Focus is placed on promoting the variety, versatility, vitality and nutritional value of bread.
