Joyce Thompson - Scotland Constituency Council Member

Who you are (and how you got to where you are)

I’m Joyce Thompson, Scotland Constituency Council Member.
I initially wanted to become a vet so went to study agriculture but I soon realised that it wasn’t for me. I had an interest in food, science and people and so I started dietetics at Queen Margaret College in Edinburgh the following year and qualified as a state registered dietitian in 1982. I followed a clinical career until 2004 when I was appointed to my current position which was the first Allied Health Profession Consultant post in Scotland.

Why you wanted to be on BDA Council?

I joined BDA Council as I really wanted to give something back to my profession.
In my role as Chair of the BDA Scottish Board, I like having the opportunity to work with others to make improvements and advances in the nutritional wellbeing of the population.
I want to inspire our profession to show the way on a population approach to the prevention and treatment of nutrition related disease and to see more dietitians take the lead on nutrition in Scotland.
As a profession we have spent a long time getting nutrition on the agenda and now we must ’step up to the plate’ – if we don’t do it someone else will. I believe we are well placed as a profession to take the lead but we will need to work in partnership with others and value the contribution of other health professionals, and partner organisations, and especially patients and public themselves.

What is your role on Council?

I am the BDA Constituency Council Member for Scotland and so therefore am Chair of the Scotland Board.

What are the aims of the board?

The Scotland Board represent the interests of the profession and members in Scotland to key stakeholders, such as government departments and other professionals; whilst also representing members in Scotland at UK level.

Who inspires you (dietetically and non-dietetically) and why?

Non dietetically - Noel Fitzpatrick inspires me - his professional expertise and vision for the future is in perfect balance with his sensitive compassion for people and their pets

And finally…

Be the change you want to see!
