Yes, several weeks of pure sun and scorching heat, a world cup to instil admiration in the England football team, ongoing political crises at home and abroad, followed by rain and floods. Summer is here!
Those of you who voted in the recent proposal to change our governing document, thank you. It is only with your support that major decision making takes place. While only a small percentage of the membership voted (which we understand, it is not exciting to many members) the vast majority of the votes supported Council’s proposals. I should add that we had a better turnout than some of our much larger sister associations, for similar votes. But we will aim to improve on this should we need ask for your vote in future.
As a result, the new Council is developing a programme of work to implement the new proposals and further updates will be given through Dietetics Today and the usual e-zines. This is one of the most exciting times in the history of the BDA and the opportunity to create a new style of Council which can deliver even more for the membership and the profession. It is also worth repeating that we are not alone in this respect. Many of our sister associations in health both here and overseas are all undertaking similar pieces of work. This is a challenge that all organisations are facing, not just the BDA.
Our annual awards ceremony, celebrating innovation and excellent in the profession, took place on 19 June here in Birmingham. It was a great occasion to celebrate the fabulous work of so many members around the UK and to also welcome back many of our past Chairmen, who attended to receive the newly created past Chairman medal. The work of our Groups, Branches, Trade Union reps and media experts was recognised too, demonstrating just how diverse the BDA is when it comes to meeting members’ needs.
However, the great news kept coming over the summer with the England Chief Health Professions Officer awards, the same night as the BDA’s own awards ceremony. Two dietitians: Marianne Williams and Chloe Adams picked up awards for AHP Digital Practice and AHP Leader, respectively. Marianne won the coveted AHP Overall Winner award, beating all the other category winners. I am delighted to say that this is not the first time a dietitian has won this, an amazing achievement when you think of the number of dietitians in the context of the whole AHP workforce. Who says dietitians are not getting noticed??
I am also pleased to say the Dietetics Today has been shortlisted for an award in the Association Excellence Awards 2018, for Best Association Magazine. The winners will be announced in October and we look forward to bringing home yet another award for the BDA office and staff!
And the BDA office keeps rolling forward with our workplans and creating new and amazing ideas for the rest of 2018. Our new Strategic Plan is published and on the website for you to see. We are in good financial health and growing all the time. Thank you to all the staff and members who continue to make the BDA the world leader it is. I hope you all have the opportunity to take some time out and enjoy the summer.
