Over the last thirty five years I have worked in a wide range of hospitals, universities and research settings, in a clinical and leadership capacity and I became one of the first dietitians to achieve Consultant status in 2003. I also studied Medical Anthropology at Masters and PhD level at Keele University and have published a range of research and academic papers, including an audit of nutritional outcomes following bariatric surgery. My book, ‘Food for Health, Food for Wealth’ (Berghahn 2002, 2004) explores the emotional, social and cultural importance of food and eating to individuals and why food habits may be resistant to change in certain circumstances. I also worked with the BDA and Mental Health Foundation to produce information for those suffering with depression. Clinically, I have worked with a wide range of clients including weight management and bariatric surgery support, Eating Disorders and disordered eating and I have run specialist clinics in IBS, food intolerances, Coeliac Disease and other gut disorders. I am also an accredited advanced EFT (emotional freedom techniques) practitioner and find EFT helps to overcome cravings and support positive dietary change for the above conditions. At an organisational level I have undertaken service reviews, worked in a trouble-shooting capacity to restructure underperforming departments and have advised senior management on cultural and leadership as well as nutrition issues. I have experience as a specialist advisor in Nutrition for CQC and have undertaken expert advisory legal work on occasion.
