Move Away from Prediabetes – helping to prevent the development of type 2 diabetes

Award-winning Dietitian Farhat Hamid leads the Nutrition and Dietetics team in Brent, north London, which runs Move Away from Prediabetes programme in both Brent and previously in Hounslow. The programme uses the skills of dietitians to help drive behaviour change through one to one and group nutrition education and exercise sessions. Given that Brent has the UK’s 2nd highest prevalence of type 2 diabetes, this is a key prevention programme for at high risk groups.

The programme is targeted at those most at risk of developing diabetes following a blood test by their GP. At six months some 83% of those completing the course had lowered their blood glucose sufficiently to no longer be classified as prediabetic. Over 90% of those completing successfully reduced their blood glucose, with the total number of patients undertaking regular exercise more than doubling.

The programme sits alongside others, such as Fit4Life (cardiovascular disease prevention for adults at risk of diabetes or with high blood pressure to reduce their weight and improve their diet), Healthy Little Eaters and the award-winning Fit4Health for children who are overweight or obese.  All these actions have the long-term effect of saving health services money and improving patient quality of life. One participant said “I’ve benefited to the full – it’s life changing”.
