Dietitians Role in World Diabetes Day 2017

This World Diabetes Day (14th November 2017), the BDA and the BDA Diabetes Specialist Group are highlighting the important role dietitians play in supporting people with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes to manage their condition and improve quality of life through diet.

Colleagues at Diabetes UK recently published a report which outlined the top 10 research priorities for people with type 2 diabetes, as chosen by patients, carers and healthcare professionals. As part of this process they received over 8,000 suggestions, a quarter of which related to diet and nutrition. This highlights just what a critical part that diet plays for people living with the condition, and the fact that many people with type 2 diabetes still feel they need more information on what works.

Paul McArdle RD, a member of the BDA’s Diabetes Specialist Group, worked on the steering group that supervised the research.

“This is an excellent piece of work which will hopefully inspire more research on the important topic of type 2 diabetes. Diet is a huge part of managing and treating type 2 diabetes, but unfortunately too few people get the evidence-based advice and support they need. Many people with diabetes are only referred to group education sessions, and uptake remains shockingly low. People with type 2 diabetes need access to individualised, one-to-one advice with a dietitian and further evidence-based support from other healthcare professional.”

Dietitians across the UK already take part in research to help improve the dietary advice and programmes available to people with type 2 diabetes.
