University College Union (UCU) Industrial action: Advice to BDA members employed in universities

05 February 2018

Members may be aware that the UCU are in dispute over proposed changes to the USS pension scheme. Following a ballot, they will be taking strike 14 days of escalating strike action beginning on 22 February. The dates are as follows:

Week 1, Thursday 22 February and Friday 23 February

Week 2, Monday 26, Tuesday 27, Wednesday 28 February

Week 3, Monday 5, Tuesday 6, Wednesday 7, Thursday 8, Friday 9 March

Week 4, Monday 12, Tuesday 13, Wednesday 14, Thursday 15, Friday 16 March

Unless you are a member of the UCU then you should not take part in any industrial action as this would be illegal and you could find yourself subject to disciplinary action.

If you are not a member of UCU and work at an institution where UCU members will be on strike you should:

  • Inform management that you will be attending work as normal.
  • Make it clear that you will not accept any variation of your contracted duties, and/or undertake the timetabled or other responsibilities of those engaged in action.
  • If you meet a picket line at your workplace then please inform those UCU members on strike that you are a member of the BDA and therefore not on strike and please let them know that the BDA fully supports their action.
  • If you decide not to cross the picket line and stay away from work then please be aware that this could result in disciplinary action being taken against you.

We would encourage you to show support by attending any rallies or other events held by the UCU. Again, please be aware that this should be done in your own time, e.g. your lunch break.

If you need any further advice then please contact Annette Mansell-Green at the BDA trade union.
