Russell Tovey Dons Chef’s Whites To Play Channel 5 Character Shane The Chef In Show Which Champions Healthy Eating29 March 2018
Being Human star Russell Tovey is donning a chef’s hat to voice the title character in new Channel 5 show Shane the Chef, a brand new British animation which will be broadcast on preschool strand Milkshake! The series follows the culinary adventures of single dad chef, Shane and his young daughter Izzy (played by newcomer Harriet Lamb). Shane the Chef is the first ever UK commissioned animated series to enthuse young children and families with a passion for fresh, healthy food and cooking. It will be broadcast on Channel 5 weekday mornings from 2 April 2018.
Supported by the British Dietetic Association Shane the Chef, the 52 x 11-minute pre-school animation series is produced by Hoho Entertainment and created by Andrew Wildman and Simon Jowett. With obesity levels rising and food knowledge amongst kids on the wane, the entertaining character led show aims to address the problem. Dr Frankie Phillips from The British Dietetic Association said, “With nearly one in ten children already obese by age 5, steps to encourage a healthier relationship with food in the pre-school years are urgently needed. Helping children learn about food and simple cooking could be one key step in encouraging awareness about ingredients and confidence in preparing a wide range of healthy foods. “
Commenting on the series Tovey said, “Shane the Chef is a celebration of food, where it comes from and what you can do with it in the kitchen. Getting children to understand healthy eating at an early age is so important. There is definitely a gap in the market for a preschool animation series that addresses this.”
The star-studded voice cast also includes: Cold Feet star John Thomson as JG, Shane’s best friend, an inventor of weird and wonderful gadgets; Britain’s Got Talent comedienne-impressionist Jess Robinson as Maggie, an organic farmer and market stall holder for whom Shane holds a secret crush; Mama Polenta, the flamboyant Italian who runs the local deli and Marc Silk (Danger Mouse) as Sam Spratt, seafaring skipper of The Happy Mackerel who supplies Shane with fresh fish and seafood delights.
Shane the Chef will feature the food exploits of Shane, Izzy, their friends and neighbours as they run their restaurant in the town of Munchington. Every day is a recipe for adventure, as they explore Shane’s passion for healthy eating. Whether it's trying to build the biggest baguette for a world record, finding wild herbs in the woods or growing large vegetables for the village county fair, Shane's firm belief is that, when it comes to food, "fresh is best".
Shane the Chef is produced by Hoho Entertainment in association with Cloth Cat Animation.
