BDA pleased to endorse new competency framework for Allied Health Professionals from MNDA08 October 2018
Over the past year, BDA members have worked with the MND Association, MS Trust and Parkinson’s UK on the development and retention of staff with a neurological specialism in the health and social care system. Today, we are delighted to have endorsed the important new resource that this project has produced.
The project identified and mapped the competencies of the various levels of dietitian working with patients with progressive neurological conditions. It has additional sections which focus specifically on Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis and motor neurone disease.
The output of this project is an accessible resource for use by practitioners and those who manage and commission services. It aims to provide a framework that promotes greater consistency in allied health professional services for people with progressive neurological conditions. The list of competencies, approved by relevant professional bodies, are designed to support practitioners to achieve and maintain high quality, safe and effective care to people with progressive neurological conditions, support continued professional development at individual and team level and support professional revalidation, recruitment and retention of specialist roles.

Emma Hoggins, the chair of the Neurosciences Specialist Group for the British Dietetic Association which supported the development of the framework said: “Research by the MS Trust and Parkinson’s UK found that AHPs wanted profession-specific, peer-reviewed common competencies in the area of progressive neurological conditions. What is more, a recent MND Association ‘State of MND Care’ report found nutrition care to be one of the areas most in need of improvement, so these new competencies are very timely.
“This work highlights just how much dietitians need to know about progressive neurological conditions, and what a vital role a dietitian should play in the treatment and care of patients with these conditions. We are delighted to support these competencies and encourage dietitians and all AHPs to use them to help guide their development and inform their practice.”
The desired outcomes from the use of these competencies are increased practitioner confidence within their practice, improved knowledge about specialist AHP neurology roles, and more effective multidisciplinary team working.
Free online module also launched
Our partners at MNDA have also developed a new online module which the BDA has also been proud to endorse. The course was created by a group of health professionals, representative of the multidisciplinary team. The aim is to help allied health professionals (AHPs) and trainee AHPs explore the key factors in the effective operation of a multidisciplinary team for the treatment and care of people living MND.
The free course runs over six weeks and during it participants are encouraged to interact with their fellow students to enrich the experience of all taking part.
