A Universe of Opportunities for your career05 February 2019
A new careers resource created by Health Education England to help dietitians and other AHPs develop their career has been launched today. It aims to inspire, motivate and unleash the often-untapped talent across all the Allied Health Professionals (AHPs) across the country.
The careers resource includes animations and covers eight potential areas for career development. Within each area, it provides a wealth of information to highlight the wide range of career development options, all whilst continuing to work clinically if desired.
AHP colleagues taking different career journeys from across all 14 disciplines appear in specially created videos on the site. Visit the resource to find out what has helped them, how they have overcome barriers and what they enjoy most about their work.
We are delighted to see a number of dietetians featured in the clinical, research and public health areas. Thanks to Nick Trott, Anne Holdoway and Kate Lees for taking part and sharing their experiences with the HEE team.
Nick is a Gastroenterology Dietitian at Sheffield Teaching Hospital. Working as part of the multi-disciplinary team (MDT), Nick talks about his clinical role. He thinks it’s “a fascinating time to be an AHP at the moment” and he reflects on how AHPs could support other members of the MDT in novel, new and supportive ways so we can take that forward and develop our practice.
Anne is a Freelance Consultant Dietitian and Independent Practitioner who talks about her varied career path in the research area. Anne believes that her diverse career over 30 years has developed her “skills in both research and education, the private sector industry and the NHS.”
Kate is a Dietitian and Consultant Public Health Specialist who talks about her career in public health, saying “I've worked with improving global health, and in so many different areas, and it's just really exciting work and I love the variety that it brings.”
Do watch the other videos on the resource – there’s a great variety to choose from. HEE aim to show that there’s no right or wrong career path. The resource is designed to help you decide what’s right for you and help you create the right opportunities.
Take a look and venture into 'the universe of opportunities' to help you shape your own career path and make an even bigger impact on people’s health and wellbeing.
The careers resource is hosted on the HEE e-Learning for Healthcare website and can be accessed here: www.e-lfh.org.uk/ahp.
