Working towards Advanced Practice

Advanced Practice gives dietitians, and other AHPs/nurses, the opportunity to further develop their clinical career. It can be a stepping stone to consultant practice (academic level 8).

In this section you can assess where you are currently practising for the clinical pillar – are you practising at an enhanced level or are some aspects of your practice at an “advanced” level?

Remember to be an Advanced Practitioner your role must include all 4 pillars. Some very experienced clinicians may be close to advanced level. This can be recognised by completing a portfolio. Any gaps in skills/knowledge can be identified and a training programme agreed.

Alternatively you can undertake a relevant Masters in Advanced Practice. Speak to your manager/organisation lead about courses.

In England you can apply for the e-portfolio route. You will be assessed by Health Education England in conjunction with a HEI. In Wales this is generally undertaken through a panel within the Health Board.

The BDA also run an online discussion forum for Advanced Practice, Basecamp. You can join this by emailing [email protected]
