Non-Dietitian Introduction to Nutrition in Mental Health, Learning Disabilities and Eating Disorders

This online, self-directed course, is open access so that you can complete it at a time and place that is convenient to you.

This course aims to provide healthcare workers with a basic overview of nutrition in mental health disorders, learning disabilities and eating disorders, so that they can support service users' physical health needs.

Who is this course for?

  • Healthcare workers in mental health, learning disabilities, and eating disorders, for example dietetic support workers, nurses, occupational therapists, healthcare support workers, nursing associates and associate practitioners
  • Anyone who is looking for an introduction to the areas of mental health, learning disabilities, and eating disorders.

What is covered in this course?

By the end of the course you will be able to;

  • Identify and examine the impact of nutritional issues concerning those affected by mental health disorders, learning disabilities, and eating disorders. Including an introduction to;
    • Nutritional screening
    • Malnutrition
    • Overweight and obesity and related conditions
    • Re-feeding syndrome
    • Constipation
    • Disordered eating
  • Recognise nutritional red flags and know when to refer onward and how to signpost to resources
  • Apply first-line advice in supporting service users with their nutritional needs, appropriate to your scope of practice
  • Promote the importance of nutrition and physical health within mental health, learning disabilities, and eating disorders services as part of an integrated approach to recovery.

How long will it take to complete the course?

Learners will work at their own speed but on average, this course will take approximately two and a half hours to complete. This may take longer, depending on how much reference is made to the additional resources.
