Speaker details

Dr Esther K. Papies (PhD) is a Senior Lecturer in the Institute of Neuroscience and Psychology at the University of Glasgow, where she heads the Healthy Cognition Lab and the Research Centre for Social, Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience.  Her team’s focus is on health cognition, and she is an expert in research on self-regulation in obesogenic food environments, the trade-off between short-term desires and long-term health goals, habits, and the psychological processes underlying successful behaviour change.  Dr Papies is particularly interested in the interplay of personal motivation and environmental factors underlying healthy and sustainable food choices, and the motivation for sugar-sweetened beverages and water.  Her work has been published in prestigious outlets such as the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Health Psychology, and the International Journal of Obesity, and it is currently funded by the Economic and Social Research Council in the UK.  Dr Papies is passionate about combining fundamental laboratory work with field experiments, and about developing effective strategies to enhance people and planet health.

Johanna Hignett is a Registered Nutritionist (RNutr) and a member of the British Dietetic Association (BDA). She has extensive experience as a nutritionist within the food industry and now works as a nutrition consultant through her business ‘Nourish Consulting’ providing nutrition support and advice to the food industry and allied companies such as advertising and PR.   Clients have included major UK retailers, food companies, charities and trade associations.  Johanna is an editorial board member on the BDA sponsored magazine ‘Healthier Lives’ and also a part time nutrition lecturer at London South Bank University.

Helen Bird has always had a passion for sustainability and has worked in resource management for 13 years, and has been at WRAP for 11 years. She oversees the roadmap for the delivery of The UK Plastics Pact, a whole chain approach to tackling plastic waste. Key workstreams include eliminating unnecessary/problematic plastics, recyclability and composting, film/flexibles, recycled content and end markets. Helen is a key spokesperson, responsible for developing and often delivering WRAPs messages on plastics and recycling.

She has overseen WRAP’s work on Consistency in Household Recycling – a whole chain initiative to increase recycling, improve material quality, provide opportunities for collaborative procurement and efficiency savings, all while increasing the consistency in materials collected from householders.  Her experience and expertise covers local authority collections, sorting and reprocessing and citizen engagement.

Prior to settling in the field of sustainability, Helen held Marketing roles, including in the food manufacturing sector.
