Policy statements, position papers and guidance

The BDA is always looking to support the development of policy statements, position papers or guidance on issues that a relevant and important to the dietetic workforce. They are helpful to members, decision makers and members of the public as they give a clear and evidence based position on issues that are often quite complex. They also help the BDA internally when we need to respond quickly and decisively on these same issues.

Types of statement

There are a range of statements that could be developed. Each of these has a unique audience and purpose. These include:

Type Purpose
Position paper

A comprehensive paper designed to state the BDA position (usually on a narrower more specific topic or topics). Position papers do not set out specific actions, although they may include recommendations. A position paper should contain background information and discussion to provide the reader with a complete understanding of the issues involved and the rationale behind the position(s). A position paper frequently cites outside sources and may include a bibliography.

Policy statement

A straightforward statement designed to state the BDA standpoint (usually on a broad area). It sets out actions we will take or want others to take on that matter. Policy statements are usually short and concise and do not include background information or discussion. Generally, Policy statements do not quote facts or figures developed by outside sources and would not utilise a bibliography.

Guidance

A guidance statement supports the implementation of policies, best practice, or regulatory expectations. A guidance statement will serve as a reference document for the workforce where a need or gap in other documentation is identified. The guidance statement must be clear, evidence-based, and aligned with existing regulations to ensure its effectiveness. A guidance statement is likely to be on a specific topic and should be subject to periodic review to determine ongoing relevance and accuracy.

We are always keen to hear from members, branches and specialist groups either on topics we should be covering or to get their feedback on existing or new policy or position statements. Where possible we will let you know via Members Monthly if there are opportunities to contribute.

Submit a request

If you are interest in exploring the option to develop a BDA statement, paper or guidance on a particular topic, members can complete and submit their request using the BDA Statement Request Form. We aim to respond to all requests within 3-4 weeks.

  2. BDA internal team review the request and accept or decline this.
  3. Working group of experts in the topic area is developed.
  4. Working group drafts the content, drawing on evidence and consulting with others as appropriate, including external stakeholders.
  5. Draft content is submitted to the BDA internal team for review and sign off. Sign off is generally approved via BDA Senior Leadership, but may also include BDA Board of Directors or the most relevant BDA Committee.
  6. The resource is published, and BDA internal team implement communication plan or campaign strategy if needed.
