Become a BDA Rep

Why become a Representative?

BDA Reps are at the heart of our union and act as the local voice of BDA members in the workplace.

Reps:

  • Play a vital role in supporting members and strengthening dietetic voices locally and nationally.
  • Help address workplace concerns, improve working conditions and ensure colleagues' views are heard.
  • Make a meaningful difference by advocating for positive changes that matter to you and your colleagues.
  • Develop valuable skills such as communication, organisation and advocacy.
  • Be part of a supportive network of reps across the UK, with training and ongoing support from the BDA.
  • Take on a flexible role that can fit around your existing commitments.

Many of our reps tell us that the role helps them grow professionally, develop confidence, build new networks and gain a deeper understanding of how workplace decisions are made.

What does a BDA Representative do?

As a BDA Trade Union representative, you help ensure members have a strong voice in their workplace. Depending on your interests and availability, you may:

  • Support members by listening to concerns and helping them access advice and support.
  • Raise workplace issues collectively with employers to help improve working conditions.
  • Keep members informed about workplace developments, campaigns and opportunities to get involved.
  • Build a visible BDA presence in your workplace and encourage colleagues to engage with the union.
  • Work with managers and other trade union representatives to help ensure members' views are heard.

You do not need to know everything straight away, and you do not need any previous trade union experience. We provide training, guidance and ongoing support to help you develop confidence in the role.
