Marc Briggs
PhD
Dr Marc Briggs is a Senior Lecturer within the Department of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation. Marc contributes to teaching at all undergraduate and postgraduate levels delivering lectures, seminars, practicals and laboratory workshops across a wide range of modules, primarily in Sport and Exercise Nutrition.
Marc is a former graduate of Northumbria University, gaining a first class degree in Applied Sport Science and Coaching (BSc Hons). Additionally, Marc is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), successfully completing a Post Graduate Certification if Higher Education Practice (PGCHEP). In 2017, Marc has been awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Sport and Exercise Science. Marc’s thesis investigated the Dietary Habits of Adolescent Academy Soccer Players. Working with Sunderland AFC Academy, Marc was able to design innovative methods to assess energy balance identifying evidence of sub-optimal energy consumption; subsequently incorporating intervention strategies identified to improve nutritional intake amongst this elite population.
Marc also endeavours to be an applied practitioner, currently providing consultancy support to Sunderland AFC in his role as Sport Nutritionist to Academy footballers. Additionally, Marc also works closely with other professional football clubs including Newcastle United and Middlesbrough, in a range of roles including performance analysis, talent ID, training load monitoring and match-play demands. Marc has also travelled to Zambia and delivered specific sessions on nutrition and plyometrics to the head Olympic team coaches at the Youth Olympic Development Centre in Lusaka.
