A highly specialised module aimed at those working in level 3 neonatal intensive care units. This module will also be of interest to those working in level 2 local high dependency neonatal units. View Example Programme.
Due to the high demand for places on this module, international delegates (outside of the UK and Ireland) are not eligible to apply for a place via the online application system. Please be aware that the pre coursework for this module includes the HEE modules Introduction to Neonatal Dietetics part 1&2 & workbooks plus a reading list. eLearning for health courses is now accessible to all UK NHS employees. Non-NHS employees and international students will need to pay a small fee to access.
The pre coursework must be completed as a pre-requisite for the course. If you don't currently work on a neonatal unit you will need to arrange a visit(s) to the unit and neonatal out-patient clinic to assist in completing the workbook, in advance of the first day of the Module.
eLearning pre course work will take average student 6-14 hours to complete (inc workbook) depending on neonatal experience. Those with more neonatal experience may not need to complete all the workbook tasks and they should evaluate which of the tasks will support them closing the knowledge gap alongside their line manager/ local neonatal dietitian. We recommend the pre coursework is completed over a number of week (example 2-4 hours per week for 3-4 weeks) those with expertise will take less time and those without any experience will take longer.
The pre coursework for the module is the e Learning for health neonatal online modules (please confirm the correct title) this is only available to NHS UK based dietitians. If you are unable to access there is a fee of £45 which the student is responsible to arrange registration and payment. Modules take place virtually and in person on the following dates, you are required to attend all four dates;
- Welcome Session - Tuesday 5 November 2024 - Virtual
- Part 1 - 25 & 26 November 2024 - Virtual
- Part 2 - 10 & 11 December 2024 - BDA office in Birmingham
- Post tutorial - January 2025 - Virtual

Each module is endorsed by the BDA upon completion of pre-course work and attendance at a four-day taught module. The modules are also incorporated into the MSc Advanced Professional Practice (Paediatric Dietetics) course, in partnership with the University of Plymouth. Each module has an award of 20 MSc credits attached, upon completion of pre- coursework, attendance at the four-day taught module and post-course assignment. If you are registering to undertake this module for MSc credits, you will be required to complete an MSc level assignment in order to pass the module. The assignment requires strong academic writing and critical appraisal skills. In order to ensure you are best placed to succeed at this assignment, we strongly advise that you should enrol and complete the Applying Evidence to Practice module first, before enrolling on this paediatric module.
