Introducing research activities

Research activities underpin effective nutrition and dietetic practice by strengthening the evidence base and driving improvements in services, care, outcomes, safety, and experiences. They play a vital role in advancing practice, reducing uncertainty, and demonstrating the impact of the dietetic workforce.

Defining research activities

The term ‘research’ not only refers to undertaking research studies; the term can encompass other activities that use research studies or generate evidence1Research activities is an umbrella term used to describe a range of work that  use research or create evidence. This includes:

  • ShapeUsing research studies for evidence informed practice,
  • Creating practice guidelines from evidence for knowledge mobilisation,
  • Compiling and presenting a case study
  • Collating and presenting outcomes data
  • Designing, being involved in and/or leading an audit, service evaluation, quality improvement or research project.
  • Leadership in research related activities

Your role in research activities

Every member of the dietetic workforce is involved in research activities, contributing to research and impact across practice. The nature and level of involvement will vary according to:

  • your role
  • your level of practice

Further information on the research capabilities expected at each level can be found within the BDA Dietetic Career Framework

Our vision

Research and evidence are at the heart of dietetic practice, driving impact, credibility, and continuous improvement across the profession.

We want to ensure that:

  • The dietetic workforce operates in environments where research is inclusive, valued and research activities are embedded within roles and routine practice.
  • Advancing practice, and dietetic workforce impact, is evidenced by high-quality research activities delivered by a research-competent and confident dietetic workforce.
  • Healthcare leaders, government and the wider public recognise the value and positive impact of dietetic workforce interventions for individuals, populations and healthcare systems.
