Welcome to the BDA's new evidence-based resource page for medicines for obesity. These are offered free of charge to the public and healthcare professionals, and developed by the BDA Obesity Specialist Group.
Medications for obesity may be used as a tool to help people manage their weight. They can also help people with type 2 diabetes control their blood sugar levels.
These medications go by several names, such as GLP-1s, GLP-1 receptor agonists, weight loss medications, or incretin therapy. Brand names include Mounjaro, Saxenda, and Wegovy. On this page and in our resources, we call them medications for obesity. This does not include advice on other medications for obesity like Orlistat.
The resources on this page are freely available to patients, carers and professionals. The resources have been developed through a process involving people living with obesity taking medications for obesity, dietitians and other healthcare professionals.
The main resource offers general advice from dietitians.
If you need specific, personal advice on diet then please seek a referral to a dietitian. If you require specific medical advice in relation to medications for obesity please speak to your GP, healthcare team or medication prescriber.
