Consent, Capacity & Dietetics

Recently updated, this course is being delivered at the BDA office in Birmingham it was developed by the BDA Mental Health Specialist Group.

Aim:

The content is primarily designed to meet the needs of registered dietitians, but may be applicable to other professionals supporting service users with diet-related concerns e.g. nurses, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, and dietetic assistants. It aims to provide essential knowledge on valid consent and the application of the Mental Capacity Act (MCA) in dietetic practice.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand the ethics and validity of consent
  • Understand the principles of the Mental Capacity Act
  • Consider how this applies to dietary-related risks
  • To understand when and how to complete a capacity assessment relating to dietary interventions
  • To understand how to respond to the outcome of a capacity assessment relating to dietary interventions and who to communicate this with.
