Enhanced Communication Skills for Healthcare Professionals

**NEW COURSE**

This new course, held at the BDA office in Birmingham,  is aimed at the dietetic workforce working in various settings, including acute, community, and mental health, and learning disabilities. The course is suitable for those new in post and equally as a useful update for those with some previous knowledge and experience. The interactive day will cover the importance of good communication, including identifying and addressing barriers to communication, communication cues, inhibiting behaviours, facilitating questions, handling difficult situations, and the importance of self-care and reflection. It will provide an opportunity to improve and develop skills and competencies in specific practice areas, such as one-to-one consultations.

Aim

This one-day course aims to facilitate participants to:

  • Enhance their understanding of the importance of good communication skills in working with service users
  • Enhance their communication skills to be able to recognise barriers, cues, and avoid behaviours that inhibit communication
  • Critique communication skills, recognising gaps and identifying required skills

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the one-day course, you will be able to:

  • Describe why good communication skills are so important in the workplace.
  • Recognise the impact of poor communication and listening skills.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of both communication cues and inhibiting behaviours
  • Demonstrate an understanding of which skills to use when having difficult conversations and breaking bad news.
  • Reflect on your skills and identify any areas for further skill development.
