Mental Health Specialist Group - Mental health and physical health: Bridging the gap in dietetics Study Day

Hosted by the Mental Health Specialist Group 

The group are excited for their study day returning face to face. Topics being covered include mental health and physical health, medical management of obesity in severe mental illness session, physical activity and eating disorders: physio perspective, LD physical healthn needs, physical activity and eating disorders: dietetic perspective, LD case discussions and networking, nutritional bloods in ARFID and workforce.

Speakers

Dr Hermoine Price, Consultant Diabetologist for Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust in Hampshire and for University Hospitals Dorset in Bournemouth. 

Dr Price is an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Southampton where she has a research interest in the interface between diabetes and mental ill health.  Dr Price has published widely on this topic and has received several research awards.

Dr Price is passionate about delivering specialist diabetes care in a community setting.  She is especially interested in improving care for those people often thought of as “hardly reached” including people in care homes or living with a serious mental disorder or a learning disability.

Dr Price’s presentation will cover the close associations between diabetes and mental disorders and work she has undertaken to improve diabetes and weight management for those living with psychosis.

Dr Kirsten Lamb, MA MB BChir Cantab, FRCGP, DCH, DRCOG, Cert Med Ed

Kirsten is a retired GP. She chairs the RCGP special interest group for learning disability. She chaired the Hertfordshire LeDeR (learning disability mortality review) steering group until June 2021. Whilst working as a GP in Herts, she was the Clinical Lead for Learning Disability for Herts Valley CCG. She created the national digital template for the learning disability annual health check. She has worked with NHSE and RCGP to create the Quality Improvement domain in learning disability for GPs. She is the RCGP representative on the Learning Disability Professional Senate. She has developed a certificate level training in learning disability with the Royal College of Physicians and Health Education England as well as participating in research with Centre for Intellectual Disability Equitable Research, Plymouth University.

Jo SmithB.Sc. (hons), M.Sc. R.D. Consultant Dietitian (Clinical Academic), Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust & Teesside University

Jo has been working as a Registered Dietitian within the NHS for over 25 years after qualifying in 1997 from Leeds Metropolitan University.  She gained a MSc in Evidence Based Practice in 2008 and is currently studying part-time for a PhD in Nutrition at Teesside University. Jo was Head of Dietetics at Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust for 15 years and previously chaired the Mental Health Specialist Group of the BDA.  She currently works as a Consultant Dietitian (Clinical Academic) jointly between the NHS and Teesside University and is Chief Investigator on several NIHR research grants. Jo has a specialist interest in food insecurity, obesity, health inequalities, dietary intakes, and the eating behaviour of people with mental health conditions.

Emma Giles, Associate Professor Public Health, Teesside University

Emma is an Associate Professor in Public Health and has been working at Teesside University in the School of Health and Life Sciences undertaking applied public health research for eight years. Emma gained a PhD from Newcastle University in 2010, and predominately researches complex interventions for weight management and obesity, the interface of physical health and mental health conditions, food insecurity, and behaviour change. She Chairs the North East Obesity Forum, is a co-deputy lead for the Integrating Physical Health, Mental Health and Social Care NIHR Applied Research Collaboration North East and North Cumbria research theme, and is a Public Health Speciality Lead for the NIHR Local Clinical Research Network North East and North Cumbria.

Briony Caffery, Highly Specialist Dietitian, Dietetic Clinical Lead for Learning Disabilities Cornwall Adult Community Learning Disabilities Service, Founder & Chair of the Learning Disabilities Subgroup, Learning Disabilities Education Officer for BDA Mental Health Specialist Group 

Briony Caffrey is dietitian passionate about health equity and serving people with Learning Disabilities. Health activist. She is passionate about advocating for a fairer and more informed society by raising awareness with an evidence-based approach to educating students, health professionals and beyond. Briony is an Education Officer for Learning Disabilities with the Mental Health Specialist Group and Chair of the newly-formed Learning Disabilities Sub-group. She advocates for a fairer and more informed society by raising awareness with an evidence-based approach to educating students, health professionals and beyond. Briony is passionate about meeting the dietetic needs and reducing health inequalities of people with Learning Disabilities and she strongly believes that dietitians have a key role in improving quality of life and length of life.  

In her personal life, Briony is sibling to an amazing woman with a learning disability, who has taught her the importance of connection, compassion and empowerment, often through the medium of song and play. Through her family’s experiences, Briony has seen opportunities to further improve health and social care services which helps inform a wholistic approach with her dietetic work.

Marsha McAdam, Independent Mental Health Network. An Ambassador and Peer Consultant at Centre for Mental Health, Expert by Experience Chair for Equally Well UK and also the Vice Chair of the Mental Health Network's NHS Confed.

Specialisms: Living with chronic illness, BDP, depression and motivational speaker

An Expert by Experience, influencer and ambassador Marsha is committed to bringing about positive change within the mental health sector. She identifies as having a diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and physical health comorbidities. After receiving life-changing mentalisation-based therapy (MBT), and with the support and recognition of those working with her, Marsha embarked on a venture to use her lived experience to inform policymakers and clinical staff and support service transformation in both physical and mental healthcare. More recently, Marsha has initiated, organised and led a national Personality Disorder and Stigma project with key UK clinical, voluntary sector and policy leaders.

Marsha occupies important advocacy and advisory positions including as an Ambassador and Peer Consultant for Centre for Mental Health, is the Vice Chair on the NHS Confed’s Mental Health Network and is the Expert by Experience for Equally Well UK. She has sat on some of the most transformative boards and panels, including being a member of the governments Mental Health Act Review Team, a founding member of the Speaker Collective and the Lived Experience Group for Equally Well.

Marsha is also a national speaker on matters such as parity of esteem, personality disorder, stigma and discrimination. Having the opportunity to help others enables Marsha to remain positive and is essential to her wellbeing.

Clare Thornton-Wood, Lead Principal Dietitian at University of Sussex Foundation Trust

Clare is currently Lead Principal Dietitian at University of Sussex Foundation Trust (Worthing site). Until April 2023 Clare was Clinical Dietetic Lead of the Feeding and Eating Disorders team at Great Ormond Street Hospital, where she worked for the previous 5 years. Clare graduated from the University of Surrey with a BSc(Hons) in Nutrition and Dietetics in 2010. Clare has worked in a number of acute and community settings, almost exclusively in paediatrics for the duration of her career. Clare has a specialist interest in  Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorders (ARFID) and during her time at Great Ormond Street this formed a large part of her caseload. Clare is a member of the BDA Special Interest Group for dietitians working in ARFID and was one of the co-authors for the BDA Position Statement on the Role of the Dietitian in the Assessment and Treatment of Children and Young people with ARFID.

Alongside clinical practice Clare is a regular contributor to the media, appearing as a dietitian on the TV, radio and written press and educational webinars. In 2019 Clare was awarded BDA Media Spokesperson of the Year. Prior to her dietetic career Clare completed a music degree and a PhD in music, botany and engineering around musical instrument reeds. Clare continues to play her oboe in a number of orchestras in the South of England and finds this a welcome way to relax and unwind

Abbie Alston, RNutr, Nutrition Science Liaison, PrecisionBiotics

Abbie Alston is a Registered Nutritionist with the Association for Nutrition (AfN), a professional and regulatory board for qualified nutritionists. She completed her nutrition degree at Bournemouth University and has a BS in Nutrition Sciences. Abbie has worked in the medical nutrition industry for over seven years, working with products that will promote a healthy gut microbiome in children and in adults, and can be used in a range of medical conditions.

Abbie now works as a Nutrition Science Liaison at PrecisionBiotics Group, helping to connect consumers and nutrition professionals with the science of the gut microbiome and its impact on health.

Keren Chapman, Specialist Dietitian, Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust

Keren is a Sports Dietitian specialising in Mental Health. Keren is trained in motivational interviewing and behaviour change, and works closely with individual clients to help them make changes to their diet and lifestyle to optimise their physical and mental health. Since graduating in 2013, Keren has gained further qualifications as a Personal Trainer and a Level 3 Award in Supporting Pre and Postnatal Clients. Furthermore, Keren has obtained a Postgraduate Certification in Sport and Exercise Nutrition at Leeds Beckett University. Keren enjoys being active in the great outdoors and began running in 2018. She has since never looked back! She ran her first Marathon in 2019 and has since gone on to run two ultramarathons, during which she fundraised for mental health charities and continues to be an advocate for mental health awareness.

With over 10 years experience working as a Registered Dietitian, Keren is passionate about bridging the gap between physical and mental health, and improving clients’ relationship with diet and exercise to help them reach their full potential.
