Equality, diversity, and inclusion position statement

Equality, diversity, and inclusion needs a strong commitment and deliberate action to build an inclusive environment where diversity is valued, opportunities are open to all, where everybody can reach their full potential without fear of harassment, prejudice or discrimination and to create a sense for all of belonging to the Dietetic community.

Every person who contributes to the functioning of the organisation (including BDA staff, members, volunteers or anyone working on behalf of the BDA), has a responsibility for making the BDA and the dietetic profession an inclusive environment where all members of our community feel welcome and are able to be themselves.

Our work to embed equality, diversity and inclusion is anchored in the duties as applied to the protected characteristics set out in the Equality Act 2010 that require us to have due regard to:

  • Eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation and other conduct prohibited by the Act
  • Advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not
  • Foster good relations between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not

It is the general expectation that all BDA staff, members and others who may be working on behalf of the BDA, will behave in an acceptable manner – treating others with courtesy, respect and consideration – and conducting themselves professionally when interacting with members of our community.

Unacceptable behaviour including bullying, harassment and victimisation or discrimination – including but not limited to the protected characteristics covered by the Equality Act 2010 – should not be tolerated and any allegations will be taken seriously and dealt with appropriately under the relevant procedures.

Our Board of Directors has ultimate accountability for our commitment to equality diversity and inclusion and for ensuring that we are able to demonstrate compliance, advancing equality by:

  • Identifying and wherever possible tackling disadvantages experienced by BDA staff, members and volunteers due to their protected characteristics
  • Taking reasonable steps to meet the needs of all people within the BDA membership who have a protected characteristic(s) to access and utilise our services
  • Taking steps, beyond encouragement, to facilitate participation from people within protected groups in activities relevant to the work of the BDA where participation is disproportionately low

Removing any existing and potential barriers to inclusion is critical to creating an inclusive environment where people feel welcomed, valued, supported and a sense of belonging.

Our approach to decision making (Equality Screening Impact Assessment) provides a structure to fully embed inclusion into any decisions, policies or activities that may impact on BDA staff, members and volunteers.
