This session focuses on building inclusive spaces for LGBTQ+ people in dietetic education and the workforce. We will explore the following:

  • An overview of LGBTQ+ demography within the dietetic workforce
  • Lived experiences of LGBTQ+ dietitians and dietetic students from recently published qualitative research
  • Evidence, frameworks and practical strategies for inclusive learning environments and workplaces with a focus on LGBTQ+ dietitians

Speakers

Dale Rees RD, Senior Lecturer in Health Sciences (Dietetics and Nutrition) at London Metropolitan University.

Has been working in academia for over a decade and graduated as a dietitian in 2009. They have mainly worked in London, whereby, they have both acute and community experience. They specialise in weight management/obesity and their research interests lie in seeking the experiences and perceptions of men with excess weight. They are also currently a PhD student at LondonMet. Have been the Chair of the BDA London Branch and a media spokesperson for the BDA.

Dorothy Balhatchet (she/her), Lecturer in Dietetics, University of Reading. 

Dorothy is a registered dietitian with experience in acute, community, public health and research settings in Australia and across the UK. She has now been working in university education for the past 10 years, having worked on dietetic programmes in London, the Midlands and the South East. She has a strong interest in Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, is a member of the BDA EDI Committee and represents that committee on the BDA Selection committee.
