  1. Summary of UK IMDs - rough numbers of people with Inherited Metabolic Disorders in the UK, how are they diagnosed, what are the different groups of disorders, roughly how many are diet treated? (Context of the talk).
  1. How are IMD services organised in the UK - how many services are there, and how is treatment commissioned? Specialist centres + Primary care 
  1. What are the different types of dietetic interventions in inherited metabolic disorders eg
    1. low protein diets counting exchanges of protein or amino acids  
    2. "safe" protein diets with moderate protein restrictions,
    3. low fat diets
    4. Emergency Regimen for patients who have metabolic decompensations
  1. What are the prescribable products used by patients with IMDs and how do they obtain the products?
  1. What are the outcomes when the prescription pathway becomes difficult?
  1. Potential for working differently to improve or strengthen the pathway.

  • Dr Alex Pinto – Research and Clinical Paediatric Metabolic Dietitian, Birmingham Women & Children’s Hospital

    More about Alex - Dr Alex Pinto is a clinical and research dietitian working with children who have IMDs in Birmingham and conducting original research across the UK and Europe. Alex has more than 70 research papers to his name.  Alex can also be found making low protein pancakes at children's parties, working on outward bound activity weekends, collecting poo samples and more.
     
  • Suzanne Ford – Specialist Metabolic Dietitian, Bristol NHS Group and National Society for Phenylketonuria

    More about Suzanne - Suzanne Ford is a clinical dietitian working with adults with IMDs in Bristol and the surrounding areas, as well as working for the patient organisation NSPKU.  Suzanne is also a research contributor, and her role at NSPKU is very varied - organising conferences, research awards, developing patient resources, and coordinating projects to improve the lived experience of PKU.
