Freelance Dietitians Specialist Group - Supporting Practice Based Learning as a Freelance Dietitian

Hosted by Freelance Specialist Group

Practice-based learning is a core component of dietetic education, yet many freelance dietitians are unsure how they can meaningfully contribute to student learning outside established organisational structures while maintaining a sustainable income. This webinar examines the role of freelance dietitians in supporting practice-based learning and outlines what is required to deliver high-quality learning experiences within freelance settings.

Attendees will gain practical insights into how practice-based learning can be integrated into freelance work in a way that is manageable, educationally robust, and aligned with professional standards. This webinar is aimed at freelance dietitians who are curious about supporting learners, currently supervising students, or looking to develop realistic and sustainable approaches to practice-based learning within their freelance roles.

By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Define practice-based learning within freelance and non-traditional placement settings, beyond the standard NHS placement model
  • Identify practical opportunities for freelance dietitians to support practice-based learning, including examples of appropriate student activities within freelance practice
  • Recognise practical considerations for delivering practice-based learning in a way that is sustainable and compatible with freelance income generation
  • Describe the key benefits and challenges of hosting practice-based learning as a freelance dietitian
  • Explore tools and approaches, including the use of Simhealth AI, to support learners and enhance the efficiency and quality of practice-based learning in freelance / non-traditional settings

About the speaker

Ellie Coles is a freelance dietitian with a strong focus on dietetic education and practice-based learning. She brings experience from the NHS, private practice, and higher education to support and guide student and graduate dietitians across a range of learning environments.

She established her freelance practice specifically to host practice-based learning for dietetic students and is now expanding this model to support placements for other allied health professionals. Ellie works with students undertaking placements outside traditional NHS settings, using a range of supervision models, reflective practice, and outcome-focused assessment to support learning and progression.

Her professional interests include quality assurance in practice-based learning and increasing placement capacity in non-traditional settings. In 2024, she also founded Simhealth AI, an educational platform that supports students to use generative AI ethically and effectively to enhance learning during placements and within academic programmes.
