Travel bursaries

The Freelance Specialist Group is pleased to offer travel bursaries to support professional development opportunities for our freelance members. Please carefully read the following terms and conditions.

Now open for nominations until the 20 June 2025. Results communicated w/c 30 June 2025.

Eligibility

The travel bursary is open to current freelance members of the Freelance Specialist Group.

  1. Applicants must not have been awarded a Freelance Specialist Group travel bursary within the past two years.
  2. Only one bursary application per individual will be considered within each bursary cycle.

Amounts available

The maximum bursary amount available per individual is £200. The Freelance Specialist Group will award up to ten travel and subsistance bursaries per year in two cycles (spring and autumn.)

Eligible expenses

The bursary is intended to cover reasonable travel-related expenses directly associated with professional development, such as travel fares, accommodation and subsistence.

Applicants must provide proof of expenses (e.g., receipts, invoices, travel tickets) and a expenses claim form within four weeks of incurring the costs.

Conditions of award

The Freelance Specialist Group reserves the right to request the return of the awarded bursary if:

  1. The funds are not used for the purpose outlined in the application.
  2. Proof of expenses is not submitted within the specified timeframe.
  3. There is evidence of misuse or misrepresentation.
Application requirements

Applicants must:

  1. Complete the application form in full.
  2. Clearly outline the purpose of travel, including how it supports their professional development.
  3. Agree to submit a short report (approximately 250 words) after the funded activity, describing the experience and how it has benefited their professional development for the Freelance Specialist Group newsletter.
Decision process

Applications will be reviewed and scored against a set criteria. Decisions are final, and no correspondence will be entered into regarding unsuccessful applications. Bursaries are awarded at the discretion of the decision makers and subject to available funds.

Payment of awards

Bursary funds will normally be paid after expenses have been incurred and proof submitted, unless otherwise agreed. Payments may be considered via invoice in advance of expenditure as agreed.

Applicants must be members of the BDA and the Freelance Specialist Group. Please ensure each section is answered. Incomplete applications will be rejected.
