Staying healthy when taking medications for obesity

Welcome to the BDA's new evidence-based resource page for medicines for obesity. These are offered free of charge to the public and healthcare professionals, and developed by the BDA Obesity Specialist Group.

Medications for obesity may be used as a tool to help people manage their weight. They can also help people with type 2 diabetes control their blood sugar levels.

The resources have been developed through a process involving people living with obesity taking medications for obesity, dietitians and other healthcare professionals.

Main resource: Medications for obesity - A guide to eating and living well

The main resource offers general advice from dietitians. This has been reviewed for accessibility by the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB).

What are medications for obesity?

These medications go by several names, such as GLP-1s, GLP-1 receptor agonists, weight loss medications, or incretin therapy. Brand names include Mounjaro, Saxenda, and Wegovy. On this page and in our resources, we call them medications for obesity.

This does not include advice on other medications for obesity like Orlistat.

The best patient resource I have seen, bar none, for anyone considering starting GLP-1 medications for obesity. Crucially, it includes the often-sidelined ‘wrap-around’ support needed for long-term success, including muscle-strengthening activity and healthier lifestyle changes, alongside clear information about how the medications work and their potential side effects.
