This session will begin by Bruno providing an overview of nitrogen balance in chronic kidney disease, followed by a summary of the current evidence on protein requirements across the CKD spectrum, including dialysis and post-transplant care. Oscar will then lead a session exploring protein needs in CKD in relation to exercise, with guidance on supporting patients who are physically active or aiming to increase their activity levels.

More about Bruno - Bruno is a non-medical prescriber and renal dietitian with over 20 years of experience. He served as Chair of the Renal Nutrition Group from 2018 to 2022. His clinical and academic interests include advanced renal dietetic practice, CKD-MBD, and nutritional requirements across the spectrum of kidney disease.
He is passionate about how renal dietetic services are evolving in response to emerging evidence and changes in clinical practice. Bruno teaches at more than 10 UK universities and has presented nationally and internationally. His recent awards include the IBEX Award (2023) and the BAPEN-PENG Award (2025). He is also co-editor for CN magazine and the co-founder of Kidney Nutrition Matters, a freelance kidney dietitian consultation service.

This session is a joint presentation with Oscar and Bruno and will explore protein needs in CKD in relation to exercise, how this compares to the protein needs of healthy active athletic people and how to nutritionally support people with CKD who are active or want to increase their activity levels.
