  • Dr Adrian Brown - Dr Adrian Brown is a NIHR Advanced Fellow and Associate Professor (Principal Research Fellow) in Nutrition and Dietetics at the Centre of Obesity Research at University College London (UCL), which he co-leads. He also serves as programme co-Lead for the MSc Dietetics (Pre-registration) course at UCL. With over 19 years of clinical experience, he is a Senior Specialist Weight Management and Bariatric Dietitian and holds a PhD in Medicine from Imperial College London.


    His research spans a wide range of topics related to obesity and nutrition, including type 2 diabetes, bariatric surgery, weight stigma, ultra-processed foods, food insecurity, sustainability, and the use of formula-based diets in various patient populations. His current NIHR Advanced Fellowship focuses on weight loss in people living with obesity and kidney failure who are undergoing haemodialysis prior to kidney transplantation.

    Dr Brown plays a leading role in shaping the field of obesity and dietetics. He is Chair of the Specialist Obesity Group for the British Dietetic Association, a trustee of the Academy of Nutrition Science, a member of the strategic council for the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Obesity and serves on the scientific council of the British Nutrition Foundation. In addition to his research and leadership roles, he contributes to academic publishing as Associate Editor for Clinical Obesity and as an editor of the Manual of Dietetic Practice.

  • Briony Caffrey, Trainee Advanced Practitioner & Dietetic Clinical Lead with the Community Learning Disabilities Team in Cornwall presenting 'Person-centred approaches to obesity management for individuals with learning disabilities' - Briony Caffrey is a learning disability dietitian with over a decade of specialist experience. She founded the BDA Learning Disabilities Sub-Group and wrote and delivers the BDA Capacity Course. Briony has published in journals and Dietetics Today, and is currently training to become an Advanced Practitioner. She is passionate about supporting people with learning disabilities and is particularly fascinated by how the Mental Capacity Act can guide dietetic practice.

  • Alex Larkin - Alex Larkin is a highly specialist dietitian for adults with learning disabilities who works in the Wandsworth Learning Disability Healthcare Team at South West London & St George's Mental Health NHS Trust. Alex has over a decade of experience working in community dietetics and has predominantly worked with the learning disability population. Alex is the vice-chair of the BDA Learning Disabilities sub-group and has published in Dietetics Today and the Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics. In 2021 Alex won the Chief AHP Officer 'Public Health Champion' Award for her nutrition improvement project in care homes for adults with learning disabilities. Alex is currently completing her MSc. in Advanced Professional Practice in Dietetics at the University of Plymouth and will be completing research in the area of nutritional screening of adults with learning disabilities. Alex will be contributing to the 7th edition of the Manual of Dietetic Practice as a co-author of the Learning Disabilities chapter. 

Objectives

• To understand the complexities of consent and capacity in the management of obesity in people living with learning disability
