Join us for an inspiring and informative event to explore diverse career paths and specialist practice in dietetics featuring three engaging presentations that showcase the breadth of opportunities within dietetics, from maternal health and inherited metabolic disorders to sport and exercise nutrition.
Orla will share her experience of working in maternal weight management, her work with midwifery and the antenatal team and also how the service has grown and developed over the four and a half years since she joined it. As well as supporting pregnant women with healthy weight gain, Orla also provides dietetic input for post-bariatric surgery, hyperemesis and other conditions that impact on nutritional status in pregnancy. She will share how Motivational Interviewing has impacted on her work.
Orla is the Dietetic Lead for Maternal Weight Management in Cardiff and Vale UHB and alongside this role, provides MotivationaI Interviewing training across the UK to a wide variety of organisations. After qualifying in 1998 she worked in acute care before moving to primary care and community with a passion in weight management and chronic conditions. She co-delivers MI workshops with Prof Stephen Rollnick, the co-founder of MI. Orla first came to MI in 2006 and became a member of MINT (Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers) in 2011, she was then successful in attaining the new MINT Trainer Certification in 2023. She currently serves as the Chair on the MINT UK & Ireland committee and has served on a number of MINT committees.
This session will provide an overview of the dietary management of inherited metabolic diseases in adults, highlighting challenges in clinical practice. It will also cover practical considerations for non‑metabolic and local dietitians, including supporting patients in shared care and how to refer to metabolic services. Future directions for care and service development will be explored, supported by case studies.
Sarah is an experienced NHS dietitian with over 20 years in clinical practice. She developed a specialist interest in the dietary management of inherited metabolic disorders (IMD) while working in emergency medicine and has since spent the past 10 years in this complex and fascinating area of dietetics. Her passion for advancing care is reflected in her recent completion of an MSc in Advanced Healthcare Practice.
Karen will present about her career as a Sport and Exercise Nutritionist (SENr), her involvement in the development of the SENr register and her current role at Cardiff Metropolitan University as Programme Director for the SENr accredited MSc Nutrition for Sport & Exercise.
Dr Karen Reid, is a Registered Dietitian and award winning Sport & Exercise Nutritionist (SENr), who has worked at an elite level in high performance sport for over 30 years.
Karen is currently a senior lecturer in nutrition and sports nutrition at Cardiff Metropolitan University where she is the programme director for the MSc Nutrition for Sport & Exercise (SENr accredited). She also delivers Nutrition Support to athletes on the TASS programme through Cardiff Met Performance Sport Services.
Karen launched her consultancy Performance Food in 2002 and is passionate about sharing her expertise with athletes and sportspeople, working with individuals, sports teams, governing bodies and sports organisations with the ultimate goal of helping them to fast track towards sporting success and draws on many years of experience designing sport specific nutritional strategies for both teams and individuals across a range of different sporting disciplines.
She has also worked within the British Olympic Association, Crystal Palace FC, Lawn Tennis Association, English Institute of Sport, the Welsh Rugby Union and Friesland Campina Institute and writes articles for sport and health publications and professional media and has presented at meetings and conferences
