Support for dyslexic members requesting workplace adjustments
As a member of the BDA, you are part of a union that understands the unique pressures of the dietetic profession. If you are a neurodivergent professional, the BDA is here to ensure you receive the legal protections and support you deserve under the Equality Act 2010. It also outlines how the BDA can assist you with assessments, meetings, and workplace challenges.
Your rights to work
Dyslexia is a recognised disability under the Equality Act if it has a "substantial and long-term adverse effect" on your ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities.
- Employer duty - Your employer has a legal obligation to make "Reasonable Adjustments" to ensure you are not at a disadvantage compared to non-dyslexic colleagues.
- Protection from discrimination - You are protected from unfair treatment linked to your dyslexia, such as being performance‑managed for slow typing without appropriate support.
Examples of reasonable adjustments
Every dietitian’s experience with dyslexia is unique. Adjustments should be tailored to your specific role, whether you are in clinical practice, research, or management.
