Specialist Group New webinar

Autism Specialist Sub-Group - The Adaptive Eating Spectrum - reframing eating disorder behaviours as an adaptive response to chronic nervous system threat

Hosted by Autism Sub-Group

In this webinar, Livia Sara will draw on her lived experience and work with neurodiverse families to explore the intersection of autism and eating disorders through an adaptive lens. Livia will introduce The Adaptive Eating Spectrum (TAES) model, reframing eating disorder behaviours not as pathological symptoms but as adaptive responses to a nervous system under chronic threat. She will cover the polyvagal foundations of autistic eating presentations, the distinction between fear-based ED behaviours and love-based autistic traits, and why autism and “eating adaptations” are better understood as deeply intertwined rather than as separate comorbidities.

Attendees can expect to deepen their understanding of autistic eating disorder presentations – including sensory sensitivities, interoceptive differences, PDA, and fear of weight gain – and gain practical, neuro-affirming strategies to support autistic clients more effectively in their practice.

Speaker

Livia Sara is a neurodivergent author, speaker, and eating disorder recovery coach committed to helping families turn their MESS into their MESSage through her books, courses, and coaching programmes. She is the founder of Liv Label Free, a neurodiversity-affirming platform founded on the philosophy that we can only see an individual for who they truly are when we remove judgment and invite curiosity. She is the author of Rainbow Girl, Nourishing Neurodiversity, How to Beat Extreme Hunger, How to Get Out of Quasi Recovery, and is currently completing her upcoming book Anorexia Autistica. Drawing on her own lived experience of anorexia and late autism/ADHD diagnosis, Livia’s work centres on reframing eating disorder behaviours as adaptive responses rooted in neurodivergence, and her Adaptive Eating Spectrum model offers a neurodiversity-affirming path to help individuals discover their unique version of freedom beyond neurotypical frameworks.
