Enhanced breastfeeding knowledge and skills for paediatric dietitians

This course has been developed to provide training and support resources for all dietitians and paediatric dietitians so that they feel able to support breastfeeding parents and their babies adequately. 

Learning Outcomes

Be able to support infant feeding

  • Understand the impact on anatomy and physiology of lactation when the child has complex medical needs e.g. congenital heart defects, faltering growth, cleft palate
  • Be able to support the initiation and maintenance of breastfeeding when a child has complex medical needs
  • Understand when and who to refer on to in order to support the initiation and maintenance of breastfeeding when a child has complex medical needs
  • Understand the role of the dietitian in maximising breastfeeding and the use of human milk when a child has complex medical needs.Use advanced feeding skills:
  • Be able to assess a breastfeed and recognise effective milk transfer
  • Be able to support parents whose child cannot feed at the breast or who needs to have supplementary milk feeds
  • Be able to advise on the correct use of pasteurised human donor milk, parents expressed breastmilk, and artificial formula feeds to maximise the child’s growth potential.
  • Understand the use of and be able to advise on the most appropriate feeding method when delivering supplementary milk feeds – syringe and cup feeding, supplemental nursing systems, bottle feeding, and enteral tube feeding
  • Develop knowledge about how to develop a robust breastfeeding strategy and implement appropriate feeding pathways in the work setting. Know who is in your local infant feeding team.
