By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Identify the core blood biochemistry tests routinely requested in NHS. gastroenterology, including those for IBS, IBD, coeliac disease and Crohn’s disease.
- Explain the clinical purpose of key gastro related blood tests.
- Differentiate which blood tests are used to:
- Exclude organic disease
- Assess inflammation and disease activity
- Detect malabsorption and nutritional deficiencies
- Recognise patterns of abnormal results commonly seen in gastroenterology
- Link blood biochemistry findings to potential dietetic implications and onward referral considerations within NHS practice.
- Increase confidence in interpreting gastro blood results in line with BDA competencies and multidisciplinary team discussions.

- FBC
- CRP / ESR
- U&Es, Creatinine, eGFR
- LFTs
- Ferritin + Iron studies
- B12 & Folate
- Coeliac serology (tTG IgA + total IgA)
- Calcium ± Vitamin D
- Intrinsic factor & Parietal cell antibodies (if B12 low)
