  • Identify the core blood biochemistry tests routinely requested in NHS. gastroenterology, including those for IBS, IBD, coeliac disease and Crohn’s disease.
  • Explain the clinical purpose of key gastro related blood tests.
  • Differentiate which blood tests are used to:
  • Exclude organic disease
  • Assess inflammation and disease activity
  • Detect malabsorption and nutritional deficiencies
  • Recognise patterns of abnormal results commonly seen in gastroenterology
  • Link blood biochemistry findings to potential dietetic implications and onward referral considerations within NHS practice.
  • Increase confidence in interpreting gastro blood results in line with BDA competencies and multidisciplinary team discussions.

  • CRP / ESR
  • U&Es, Creatinine, eGFR
  • LFTs
  • Ferritin + Iron studies
  • B12 & Folate
  • Coeliac serology (tTG IgA + total IgA)
  • Calcium ± Vitamin D
  • Intrinsic factor & Parietal cell antibodies (if B12 low)
