Paediatric Specialist Group: Paediatric dietetics in a changing world – 50 years on!

Join us for our annual virtual study day as we celebrate 50 years of the PSG and bring together dietitians from across the UK to explore the latest thinking in paediatric dietetics.

Whether you work in acute paediatrics, community, neonatal care, or specialist services, this year's programme offers something for every stage of your career — from practical clinical updates to strategic skills for growing your service.

This year's session includes:-

  • Complex Management of Enteral Feeding – tube weaning strategies- Explore the complexities of enteral feeding - from managing parental expectations to troubleshooting tube feeding issues and navigating tube weaning with Kinga Dojnikowska, Clinical Lead Paediatric Dietitian, Hounslow Community Healthcare, West London NHS Trust.

More about Kinga- Paediatric Dietitian with community-based experience and a specialist interest in home enteral tube feeding. Skilled in the nutritional assessment and management of infants, children, and young people with complex feeding and nutritional needs, working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, families, schools, and community services. Previous experience in adult nutrition and enteral feeding has provided me a strong foundation in the management of tube-fed patients across the lifespan.

  • Breastfeeding in Practice: Supporting success in clinical settings- Breastfeeding support is rarely one-size-fits-all. This session will help equip professionals with practical skills to assess milk transfer, optimise breast milk provision, manage supplementation appropriately, and support families with realistic expectations throughout their unique feeding journey with Denise King, Clinical Lead Paediatric Dietitian. IBCLC, Wirral Community Health and Care NHS Foundation Trust.

More about Denise - Our upcoming study day features an experienced dietitian Denise. Denise is Clinical lead Community Paediatric Dietitian in Wirral Community Health and Care NHS Foundation Trust.  She qualified as a dietitian in 2009 and practiced as an adult Dietitian for the NHS before realising her passion lay with paediatrics. She further expanded her expertise in paediatric nutrition by qualifying as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant in 2016. Denise also contributes to evidence-based nutrition content and publications, helping ensure families receive accurate and practical guidance. She is a parent and brings both professional and lived experience to the families she supports.

  • Managing the ex-preterm infant in paediatrics- This session will focus on how to manage infants when they transition to paediatrics either as inpatients or in community with Rachel Pountney, Principal Neonatal and Paediatric Dietitian at Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

More about Rachel- Rachel is a specialist neonatal dietitian with 12 years’ experience working within a Level 3 NICU in Bradford. She has a particular interest in the nutritional care of extremely preterm and nano-preterm infants and is passionate about improving outcomes for this vulnerable group. Alongside her clinical role, Rachel contributes to neonatal nutrition nationally through her work with the Neonatal Dietitians Interest Group and BAPM.

  • The business of better care- Top tips to turn your service need into a business case that gets noticed and gets funded with Lisa Cooke, Head of Paediatric Dietetics, Nutrition and SALT, Bristol Royal Hospital for Children.

More about Lisa- Lisa has worked as a dietitian since she graduated in 1991, she as worked at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children as head of service since 1999. She is passionate about all things Paediatric dietetics and is helping drive and improve the education provision in the profession. Lisa is an active member of the Paediatric Specialist Group of the BDA in the role of post-graduate education officer.

  • Selective eating in under-5s: A practical guide for the real world- One of the most common and most challenging referrals we see. Come away with practical strategies for assessing and managing restricted eating in young children with Emma Shafqat, Paediatric Dietitian and Feeding Therapist, Dietitian with a Difference.

More about Emma- Emma is a Paediatric Dietitian and Feeding Therapist with over a decade of experience across the NHS, special needs schools, and private practice, specialising in fussy and selective eating. A parent herself, she draws on her own experience raising a child with severe reflux and multiple food allergies, and has featured in national media and top parenting podcasts.

  • From test to treatment: Nutrition bloods in practice- Through a series of paediatric case studies, this session explores why we test, how to interpret results, and how to build an effective action plan from initial bloods through to supplementation decisions with Heather Grant, Paediatric GI Dietitian- Complex Nutrition, NHS Lothian

More about Heather- Heather is a Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (PGHAN) Dietitian based in Edinburgh, where she manages the complex nutrition and Home Parenteral Nutrition (HPN) caseload. She is a non-medical prescriber and brings clinical expertise to the management of children with complex nutritional needs. Heather's areas of clinical interest include jejunal feeding, gastrointestinal dysmotility, and the nutritional management of graduated surgical neonates. She has contributed to a number of publications in the field of paediatric dietetics. She currently serves as Chair of the Paediatric Specialist Group (PSG) of the British Dietetic Association, in which role she supports the development and advancement of paediatric dietetic practice across the UK.

  • Rome V in paediatrics: What dietitians need to know- Rome V brings important updates to the diagnosis and classification of paediatric disorders of gut–brain interaction. This session will highlight the key changes relevant to dietetic practice, including paediatric IBS and functional abdominal pain, and consider what they mean for assessment and clinical management with Bahee Van de Bor, Specialist Paediatric Dietitian, UK Kids Nutrition / BDA Paediatric Specialist Group (outgoing chair).

More about Bahee- Bahee is a specialist paediatric dietitian with over 20 years’ experience, including 12 years at Great Ormond Street Hospital. She specialises in paediatric gut health and disorders of gut–brain interaction, including IBS and functional abdominal pain.
