Recruitment of Ex-Offenders Policy Statement

The British Dietetic Association is committed to fair and inclusive recruitment practices and fully complies with, and supports our members to comply with, the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and its associated guidance.

As part of our membership service, the BDA conducts Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks for recruitment for dietetic practice, within other organisations.

We ensure that any information disclosed through these checks is handled responsibly and in strict confidence, in line with data protection regulations.

The BDA have a full data security policy that outlines our commitment to GDPR and the Data Protect Act 2018. The BDA also recognises and upholds the legislative framework set out in the Recruitment of Ex-Offenders Act 1974.

A criminal record will not automatically prevent someone from working with us, with our members, or from using our services.

We recommend that our members, when recruiting, ensure they consider each case individually, taking into account:

  • The relevance of the conviction to the role applied for
  • The nature and circumstances of the offence
  • The time elapsed since the conviction

Our aim is to support safer recruitment while promoting fairness, rehabilitation, and equal opportunities for all.
