Interview: Healthcare professionals’ experiences of providing dietary guidance and support to people living with and beyond cancer

30 June 2026

Organisation: University of Aberdeen

Description:  Healthcare professionals (HCPs) (e.g., doctors, nurses) and allied HCPs (e.g., dietitians, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists) in the UK who provide dietary guidance and support to people living with and beyond cancer (LWBC) are invited to take part in a one-to-one online discussion lasting 45–60 minutes.

This study is part of the final phase of a PhD exploring the dietary information, education, and support needs of people LWBC, and how best to support them from diagnosis to end of life.

The study aims to understand professionals’ experiences of providing dietary support in practice. While all participants share experience in supporting people LWBC, roles may vary, from those primarily responsible for diet-related care (e.g., dietitians, specialist nurses) to those who provide it as part of a broader role (e.g., doctors, nurses, speech and language therapists).

We are particularly interested in how professionals engage with patients, and communicate and collaborate with colleagues. Your insights will help identify what works well, the challenges faced, and how professional roles, workplace settings, and personal experiences shape the delivery of dietary guidance and support.

We hope to include the views of approximately 10 professionals in this study. To be included in this study, you must meet specific criteria. You are eligible to participate if:

  1. You are an allied HCP (e.g. dietitian, speech and language therapist) or HCP (e.g. doctor, nurse) or working in a patient-facing role with people LWBC anywhere in the UK.
  2. You have any experience of providing dietary guidance and/or support to people LWBC.

You are not eligible to participate if you have less than 1 year experience working with people LWBC.
