Why you should attend the BDA Research Symposium as a student

8 May 2026

Thinking of attending or taking part in this year's BDA Research Symposium? Abstract submissions are now open and applications from final year or Masters dissertation projects are strongly encouraged. Bevan Mullineux attended and took part as a student last year and won best abstract in the diabetes stream. In his blog, he explains the reasons why students should get involved with the event.

1. Network with peers and dietitians

The 2025 BDA Research Symposium welcomed more than 225 attendees and the timetabled networking lunch offers dedicated time to chat with fellow dietitians, nutritionists, industry professionals and BDA staff. It's an ideal moment to build relationships, exchange ideas and reflect on the research presented throughout the day.

For some students, networking can feel daunting. My advice is to feel the fear and do it anyway - you never know what opportunities might unfold when you start a conversation!

2. Explore different research streams and areas of clinical practice

The Research Symposium featured 21 research streams, covering areas such as diabetes, renal nutrition, oncology, obesity and weight management, public health and many others. The day is designed so you can easily move between sessions, allowing you to dip into the topics that interest you the most. As a student who wasn't yet sure which clinical speciality I wanted to pursue, this flexibility was invaluable. I was able to explore a wide range of areas, and to my surprise, some specialities I had previously overlooked ended up sparking real curiosity. I also discovered entirely new streams I hadn't considered before.

Even for students who already have a clear idea of their future clinical focus, attending the symposium is worthwhile. You'll stay up to date with emerging research in your chosen area and gain insights that can shape your future practice.

3. Gain experience presenting and discussing your own research

As students, we spend time analysing and referencing other people's research yet rarely get the chance to showcase our own. That's why submitting an abstract to the BDA Research Symposium is such a great opportunity - it lets you present something you care about and allows you to build confidence in sharing your work. The five-minute format really sharpens your ability to communicate clearly and concisely, a skill that comes in handy everywhere from university assignments and clinical placements to your first Band 5 interview.

Speaking from experience, even if the thought of presenting at a symposium feels daunting, all the BDA staff and your fellow peers are incredibly welcoming and supportive.

4. Browse sponsor stands

The event is sponsored by several well-known brands, each hosting their owns stall on the day. During the break-out sessions, you'll have the chance to chat with representatives about the latest dietetic products and stay up to date with what's currently available on the market. Many stalls also offer free information booklets and product samples, which can be valuable resources to inform your future clinical practice.

5. Get a chance to have your own research abstract published!

If all of these reasons weren't exciting enough, there's also the chance for your abstract to be published in the Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics (JHND). Having your work appear in an international, peer-reviewed journal is a standout achievement for any dietetic student or graduate. It can strengthen your CV, help you stand out in a fast-growing and competitive field and support future plans for any student wishing to pursue postgraduate study or further research opportunities.
