Lucas Guimaraes Ferreira
I am a Senior Lecturer in Anatomy and Physiology with over 15 years’ experience in higher education, research, and student development across Brazil and the UK. My academic journey began with a BSc in Sports Sciences from the Federal University of Espírito Santo (Brazil), followed by an MRes and PhD in Human Physiology, specialising in skeletal muscle physiology and metabolism, at the University of São Paulo. For 11 years, I worked at the Centre of Physical Education and Sports at the Federal University of Espírito Santo, followed by nearly five years at Coventry University, in the UK. Since 2025, I have been based at the University of Staffordshire, where I teach Sport and Exercise Science and Biomedical Science students and contribute with the Research Centre for Health and Development.
My teaching philosophy is grounded in enthusiasm and the belief that education should enable students to become lifelong learners. I view the lecturer’s role not merely as delivering information, but as facilitating curiosity, critical thinking, and evidence-based practice, grounded in principles such as Compassionate Pedagogy and Universal Design for Learning. I aim to create a respectful and supportive learning environment that connects theory to practice through problem-based learning, hands-on activities, gamification, case studies, and research-led discussions, focusing on a student-centred approach.
My research focuses on skeletal muscle physiology, with particular interest in the effects of exercise and nutrition on muscle form and function. I am investigating strategies to make skeletal muscle stronger, larger, faster, and more resistant to fatigue, with applications for both health and sport performance.
I am also accredited as Sport & Exercise Nutrition Register (SENr), a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), and a professional member of The Physiological Society.
