Piarais McShane
SENR, MSc
Hi, I’m Piarais - a SENR-accredited Sports & Exercise Nutritionist and PhD researcher at Ulster University. My passion lies in optimising performance, recovery, and long-term health through evidence-based nutrition strategies.
I currently serve as Head of Nutrition with Derry GAA, leading the planning and delivery of performance nutrition strategies within an elite inter-county Gaelic Games environment.
My doctoral research focuses on developing a behaviour change framework to improve nutritional status and service provision in elite Gaelic Games athletes, aiming to bridge the gap between research and applied practice in sport.
Alongside my work in Gaelic Games, I have also worked as a Performance Nutritionist with the Belfast Giants (Elite Ice Hockey League), supporting athletes within a professional team sport setting.
Across all roles, my focus is on translating cutting-edge science into practical, real-world performance outcomes.
In parallel, I coach triathletes with Newmeta Coaching. My own journey in sport — from distance running to representing Ireland internationally in triathlon — continues to shape my philosophy, blending lived experience with scientific expertise.
