In this webinar our expert speakers will discuss the overlapping cardiovascular and respiratory considerations in COPD, in addition to the current and future directions of pharmacotherapy in this patient group.

  • Dave Singh, Professor of Clinical Pharmacology and Respiratory Medicine at University of Manchester

More about Dave- Dave graduated in medicine from Cambridge University and then specialised in clinical pharmacology and respiratory medicine. His research interest is the development of new drugs for asthma and COPD. He is the medical director of the Medicines Evaluation Unit, where he has acted as principal investigator in over 400 clinical trials. He is a member of the GOLD Science Committee. Dave was previously the chair of the European Respiratory Society airway pharmacology group. He is currently an editor of the European Respiratory Journal and European Respiratory Review. Dave is a fellow of the European Respiratory Society and of the British Pharmacology Society. He has over 500 publications.

Summary of talk- COPD is a heterogeneous condition. Pharmacological management aims to address symptoms and reduce the risk of exacerbations. There have been advances in our understanding of inflammation in COPD, facilitating more personalised use of anti-inflammatory treatments in COPD; precision medicine.

  • Dr Peter Collins, Conjoint Senior Research Fellow in Allied Health at Gold Coast Hospital and Health Service in Australia

More about Peter- Prior to Peter's role, he has held positions in the University of Sydney, Mater, Griffith University, and University of Queensland. Peter is a UK trained Registered Dietitian (RD) and an Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) with a PhD in Clinical Nutrition from the Faculty of Medicine at The University of Southampton (June 2013). Peter’s research interests are around the detection and management of disease-related malnutrition, with a specific interest in the nutritional management of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Summary of talk- This session will examine the clustering of COPD and CVD, and explore the evidence for effective dietetic intervention in this patient group.
