Critical Care Specialist Group - Understanding the role of the non-medical prescriber (NMP) and advanced clinical practitioner (ACP) in the critical care dietitian setting.

Join us as we meet with critical care dietitians working in NMP and ACP roles. This will include time for them to share their experiences, and for us to ask questions and learn about developing our roles.

Speakers 

  • Anna Alvarez Goel - Anna Alvarez Goel is the first Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) Dietitian at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. Working within the Enteral Nutrition Team, Anna supports patients across a diverse range of specialties. Anna’s innovative role includes inserting enteral feeding tubes, undertaking comprehensive pre-assessments for gastrostomy insertion, and training healthcare professionals, patients and carers on the safe management of enteral feeding devices.

    Session: My session hopes to improve understanding to the following questions from CCSG members:
  • What is advanced practice? (with reference to the BDA Dietetic Career Framework)
  • What training routes are available? (with reference to my trainee ACP experience)
  • How can a critical care dietitian evidence skills across the four pillars of advanced practice?
  • What job opportunities are available? / Vision for the future for advanced practice dietitians in Critical Care

     
  • Sonal Patel - Currently a Senior Specialist Dietiian working in Leicester for over 30 years with expriemce of working in adult and paediatric critical care and ECMO patients for over 25 years. 

    Session: As an experienced supplementary prescriber, I have been asked to speak on how prescribing has changed my practice; details on what medicines I prescribe; how CMP's work in the ICU; and a quick update on the BDA  Independent Prescribing campaign
     
  • Curtis Roberts - Curtis is approaching his tenth year as a registered Dietitian, with over six years’ experience as a Senior Specialist Critical Care Dietitian at Manchester Royal Infirmary. He recently completed his non-medical prescribing qualification and has now undertaken his first full year of practice as a supplementary prescriber. His specialist interests include complex gastrointestinal surgery and Severe acute pancreatitis.

    Session: Curtis will be talking about 'The road to becoming and NMP' with insights into the application process, choosing the right course, and the clinical hours and assessments you will be expected to complete as well as what comes after you qualify.
